Background:
Improve the real-world experience for mechanical engineering students by shortening the CAD learning curve and allowing the use of integrated design simulation tools, including joining UNH Precision Racing, the University of New Hampshire SAE Formula One Racing team.
Story:
The University of New Hampshire is one of the top research institutions in the country. With multiple academic departments, interdisciplinary institutions and research centers, UNH stands amid rolling hills and river beds on one of the most beautiful campuses in China, attracting students and faculty from all over the world. The school's School of Engineering and Physical Sciences houses the Mechanical Engineering Department, which is equipped with first-class facilities and a strong curriculum focused on practical engineering experiences.
These hands-on experiences include advanced design programs and joining the university's SAE Formula One Racing team -- better known as UNH Precision Racing. According to Professor Brad Kinsey, Chair of the Mechanical Engineering department, UNH Precision Racing provides students with the opportunity to use their knowledge in practical competition design projects.
Prior to 2009, UNH students and members of UNH Precision Racing used competitors' 3D CAD systems when designing courses and developing Racing teams' cars. That year, UNH decided to switch its 3D CAD software to SOLIDWORKS Education Edition. "Our students found the old software extremely difficult to use, so we decided to switch to SOLIDWORKS because it is easier to use and provides students with integrated engineering and design tools." "With the old system, we found ourselves teaching CAD rather than having students quickly learn how to design tools and use them for various projects, including racing cars," Kinsey said.

For example, UNH Precision Racing must provide SAE with a mid-year report showing progress. "With the rendering capabilities of SOLIDWORKS, we can provide a realistic rendering of the car's exterior with all the manufacturing documentation," said Biles.
"Within our fleet, we rely on SOLIDWORKS to design visualization, collision detection, animation and hole misalignment tools that identify and address potential performance issues in models that will save us time and lead to better vehicles once they go into production, machining and assembly." Biles added, "We use SOLIDWORKS to import various assemblies into the master model, look at the design thoroughly, and then start machining. With SOLIDWORKS, we also started using different materials for the body, such as carbon fiber."
